Micro Chip and De-Sexing Vouchers Explained

Once your registration is paid Council will send out to you your registration tag and appropriate vouchers for micro chip and de-sexing. You can expect to receive your tag and vouchers within 2-3 weeks of payment.

Micro Chip Voucher
Micro Chip vouchers will be issued to all residents who register their dog or cat as a non micro chipped animal.  The voucher will entitle the animal owner to a $15.00 discount of the cost of microchipping carried out by the RSPCA or your local vet.

De-Sexing Voucher
De-sexing vouchers will be issued to all residents who register their dog or cat as an entire animal. The voucher will entitle the animal owner to a $15.00 discount off the cost of de-sexing their animal.  Vouchers are redeemable at your local vet.

Questions and Answers

Do I get both vouchers?
Where your animal is entire and not micro chipped you will receive both a voucher for de-sexing and a voucher for micro chipping.

I’m already responsible and have my animal de-sexed and micro chipped how is Council going to help me?
Your registration is going to be 75% discounted to reward your commitment to your animal.

My animal is already registered when will I receive my renewal?
Previously registration renewals were due around the end of financial year, Council has recognised that this is a busy time for the community and have moved the registration due date to 15 November.  2008/2009 registrations remain valid until that date, effectively giving you four free months of registration.

Why should I take advantage of this offer?
The best way to rescue and reunite animals with their owners is via Micro chipping and registration.  De-sexed animals are also less likely to roam or cause a nuisance. If you take advantage of both vouchers, the next year you will receive 75% discount on your registration.

I live on an acreage property, do I still have to register?

Registration is compulsory for all dogs and cats; however exemptions apply to 'working dogs'?

A working dog is classified by the below criteria:

(a) means a dog usually kept or proposed to be kept—

(i) on rural land; and

(ii) by an owner who is a primary producer, or a person engaged or employed by a primary producer; and

(iii) primarily for the purpose of—

(A) droving, protecting, tending, or working, stock; or

(B) being trained in droving, protecting, tending, or working, stock; and

(b) does not include a class of dog prescribed under a regulation.

Background Information - State Government Animal Management Act Introduction

The State Government has introduced the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008. This Act regulates the way that Councils in Queensland manage aggressive dogs, registration of cats and dogs, de-sexing incentives and the requirement to micro chip animals.
Gladstone Regional Council has embraced the new act as a way to address the previous inequity where some residents were required to pay registration for their cats and dogs and others were not required to register.

Animal registration combined with micro chipping is the best way to Rescue and Reunite lost animals with their owners.

Registration structure going forward…

The animal registration structure has been developed to promote responsible pet ownership by residents in the Gladstone Region.
Increasing discounts apply for owners of animals that;

  • De-Sex their animals
  • Micro Chip their animals
  • Hold pensioner or concession cards

Once payment is processed, your animal registration tag will be allocated to you along with any voucher entitlements that may apply to your circumstances.

Vouchers are valid for services conducted by the RSPCA and participating Local Vets within the Gladstone Region.
