A healthy eating pattern is fundamental to the maintenance of good health and wellbeing. Good nutrition benefits almost every aspect of our health, from birth to old age. Health problems which are linked to poor nutrition, such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers, place an enormous burden on individuals, families and society as a whole. To improve the eating patterns of residents within the Gladstone region, the Healthy Choice Awards have been developed.

The consumption of meals away from home has increased over the past 10 years. It is essential that food premises take a role in promoting good health through providing nutritious and affordable food.

In order to make healthy food more accessible and affordable to those who eat away from home, an award scheme has been developed. The Healthy Choice Awards aims to build social support by providing food premises the opportunity to create a health promoting environment and enable consumers to make the best food choice for individual health needs.

The Healthy Choice Awards provide food premises with the encouragement, support and recognition, to lead the way towards excellence in nutrition and affordability of food. Places selling food are invited and encouraged to participate in these awards and are required to achieve standards in two key areas:

1. Provide healthy and affordable food options
2. Promote the healthy food options
