The Beach Wheelchair

Gladstone Regional Council is always looking for better ways to improve access to our delightful beach at the Millennium Esplanade.  We recently became aware of a wheelchair specifically designed to provide disabled members of our community with direct access to the sand and water.  With the financial assistance of local service clubs; Boyne Island Lions and Boyne  Tannum Rotary, Council was able to purchase one of these beach wheelchairs for our community.  This exciting resource is opening up the great outdoors for people with disabilities or limited mobility allowing them to enjoy the beach and bush.

To arrange for the use of the Beach Wheelchair, please complete the attached agreement form and hand in to the Lifesaver during patrol hours, or alternatively, the Boyne Tannum Community Centre which is open 7days.

Features of the Beach Wheelchair:

The beach wheelchair has many features, not least of which is its ability to transfer directly into the ocean with the least amount of intrusion to the passenger.  It is a manual wheelchair, so it requires the assistance of second person to enable the safe transition into the water.   The Aussie Beach Wheelchair has a rigid, stainless steel, one piece frame. The seat is a moulded plastic with drainage, similar to shower chair seat. The wheels have large Nobby tyres, the bigger tyres are on the front and the smaller rear wheels are on swivel castors to allow easy turning. The rims are plastic fitted with nylon bushes to avoid corrosion. The Aussie Beach Wheelchair is extremely durable and is suitable for use by people of all sizes with disabilities.  The Aussie Beach Wheelchair has been specifically designed with removable armrests and footrests for easy transfers.

The wheelchair will be housed at the Tannum Sands Surf Lifesaving Clubhouse located at the Millennium Esplanade.  Club members will be issuing the wheelchair to members of the community and monitoring its use. Booking sheets are available from the Boyne Tannum Community Centre.

To assist with the implementation of the new wheelchair, Council will also be providing greater accessibility through modifications to the existing beach walkways.

Council would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge the contributions made by the Boyne Island Lions Club,  Boyne  Tannum Rotary and Tannum Sands Surf Lifesavers.  We are truly grateful for their assistance in helping to bring our fabulous beach lifestyle into the lives of all physically disabled members of our community.
