About the Gardens

Gladstone Tondoon Botanic Gardens is a regional botanic gardens maintaining a scientific collection from two main areas, that of the Port Curtis Region and Far North Queensland.

Tondoon Botanic Gardens are part of a conservation strategy to ensure that the nation's environmental heritage is passed on to future generations.

The Gardens were officially opened in October 1988 and extensive development has continued since the opening, incorporating more than 1,500 species in cultivation.

The Site

The physical qualities of the 83 hectare site were the major determinants influencing the planning concept for Tondoon which provides for an Arboretum and Forest Reserve as an adjunct to the Botanic Gardens. These elements are integrated with a lake and water system to enhance the site.

The dominant feature of the site is Mount Biondello which forms the northern and western boundaries and, together with its foothills, encloses and protects the lower valley creek flats where the main display areas are located.

Environmental Education for Schools & Groups
